Scenario: A 10-year old company providing online community-relationship management services to one of the major Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) firms wanted to dramatically grow its business to create a retirement nest-egg for the founders. The company had built a solid product and business based on a unique internet product with great customer service and enjoyed market-share leadership. But it was barely profitable and new competitors were arriving monthly threatening its growth rate. They didn’t have a long-term business strategy, weren’t sure in which direction to grow the business, and weren’t even sure of the market’s potential.
Engagement: Harvest Business Advisors was engaged to advise the client on whether to invest in the business and if so, how. The client wanted a business strategy, investment recommendation and execution plan to include: market potential, market segmentation analysis, competitive analysis, brand strategy, product strategy & recommendations, marketing plan, investment scenarios and implementation plan. In short they wanted to know “how large is the revenue and profit potential in the market, and how do we capture it?”
The recommendation featured several elements including the client’s expansion of its target market to include markets similar to the MLM space, a market segmentation approach to business building, the broadening of its product line, a more tightly focused brand position and ramped-up marketing effort, as well as a stepped up investment in the business.
Results: After recently implementing a majority of the recommendations, the client is already experiencing significant customer count and revenue growth. The client has repositioned its brand, retooled its product line and is preparing to launch product line extensions into adjacent markets in order to drive revenue and profit. They are convinced their market is a solid one with lots of room for growth and profit. And now with a focused strategy and plan, they are convinced they will grow their market share leadership, revenue and profits.
